After several attempts I managed to get a photo of the woodpecker that has been visiting the peanuts. It is very shy and the only way was to take a photo from inside using the camera zoom. Hence a rather blurred photo. This is a greater spotted woodpecker - black and white with a red cap.

Another brood of ducklings has hatched. Only 2 this time - unless there is more to come.

The ducklings are growing! Today we saw Daisy & 2 of her 'teenagers'. Plus, of course, Gilbert the Goose.

The Olympic Torch came to Whitby today, then moved on to Pickering via the North York Moors Steam Train. The train passed the cottage but the torch wasn't visible. However the train was filled with flag waving, local school children. A super treat for them!

News of the Ducklings

The duck families have not been around much recently - until today!! I found one stray duckling scurrying around in the garage. Whether it had just come in or been there all night, I just don't know. It was very young and obviously from a recent hatching. After much chasing I got it back into the garden thinking it was more likely to be re-united with Mum. Later I found there were 3 of them in the flowerbed. Deciding to let nature take its course, I left them to it but they kept re-appearing and headed under the gate for the road. They are so quick in spite of their youth & size but eventually they were shephered back into the garden (like a flock of sheep) and they disappeared behind the shed. After a while I found then hurrying across the lawn, heading for the pond. They climbed down the plank and went for a swim and got some food. That was the last I saw of them - I hope they made it back to the river and Mum.

Today also saw a visit from some adults males & females, 2 juveniles from the first hatchings plus Gilbert the goose. You never know who is going to visit next!!

Greater Spotted Woodpecker

The woodpecker has made a return visit to the bird table over the last week. We saw it for the first time last June, it stayed for a few weeks then disappeared until this week. It must be feeding young but it certainly knows where to find a good supply of food! They are so quick and the visits so fleeting, it is difficult to catch on film. Another instance of being in the right place at the right time!
