In the last 2 days we have received 2 months' worth of rain. So far, although very high and fast flowing, the river has not flooded. A river of water has been coming off the surrounding hills down the road and it is this water that has flooded the garden. This is made much worse by the speed of passing vehicles, causing torrents of water to flood into the garden.

The rest of the week is supposed to be drier - let's hope so as it can't get much wetter! But we are luckier than many people. Even the ducks look miserable!!

Wild Life Area

04/11/2012

At last! - The grass in the wild life area is now all cut. This is done once a year with a brush cutter which is hard work. The best time to do this is August/September but this year things got delayed with the bad weather and other commitments. However, this careful management allows the different grasses to grow up each year with a host of wild and self sown flowers. It does look spectacular, particularly in Spring and also provides a haven for wildlife - birds, insects and animals

First to appear are the snowdrops, then daffodils, bluebells, wild garlic, red campion and a host of others. There are always birds, many of which nest in the boxes provided or the trees and hedges. When the weather is good, out come the bees and butterflies and many other insects. As the grass grows long it is easy to see the badger runs.

Of course, the ducks also venture down there - especially if I'm working there and they are looking for a feed!!

Christmas & New Year

04/11/2012

There's still time to book a Christmas or New Year break. Or if you like to spend Christmas & New Year at home, why not book a few days between the two. Fill that 'dead' time between Christmas & New Year with a short break at the seaside. You may not be sitting on the beach but there is still plenty do.

Alternatively, book a short break before Christmas - to relax and do that all important Christmas shopping. Whitby has lots to offer with its small, unique shops displaying a wealth of unusual gifts. Be different from everyone else!

Autumn isn't over yet! Took this picture at 4 pm this afternoon. The setting sun shows up the autumn colours beautifully. All the tits are back, eating from the bird table and collecting insects from around the garden and perching on the building gathering insects. Also saw a weasel today scurrying around - no doubt getting ready for winter.

What a lovely day we had yesterday, even if it was a bit on the cold side. After all the rain overnight everywhere was very wet. So I spent the day planting up a new strawberry bed. Have used the raised bed in the wildlife area - this was full of flowers this year. I'll have to make sure the wildlife doesn't get to the ripening strawberries before I do!! Here's hoping we get some sun next year.
