At last - they've arrived!! This year's first ducklings. Only 3 so far. They can't be very old as they are tiny with lots of yellow down. However, they are very quick and noisy.

Is summer on its way at last? The signs are there - this beautiful rhododendron is in flower; 2 young blackbirds have been spotted; the swallows have arrived; the wild flowers are coming out; and the sun has some warmth when it does appear!

Gilbert the Goose is making his presence felt again in the garden. All the other geese have flown North again for the summer - don't know why Gilbert stays here but he seems happier with the ducks. There have been no ducklings yet - we're still waiting. The ducks spend hours in the garden, sitting round the pond, snoozing under the trees, walking across the flower beds, or just waiting to be fed. They know when the holiday cottage is occupied and 'stake out' the door waiting for any tidbits. They provide hours of entertainment if you've time to sit and watch!!.

It was 40 years ago today since the North York Moors Railway re-opened as a Heritage Railway. There are various events throughout the year to celebrate - see the website for details - www.nymr.co.uk. Today's train carried a number of VIPs including some founder members, now in their 80s and 90s. An unscheduled stop was made in Ruswarp for photographs in order to avoid the crowds. I believe that an invitation had been sent to the Duchess of Kent who opened the Railway in 1973, but don't know if she came. A number of steam engines have joined the railway for the celebrations, including the Sir Nigel Gresley.
