Low Water

Low Water

The river is running very low at the moment.  Although this is low tide I don't think I've seen it as low before.

What a Weekend!

It's been quite a weekend.

First the legs on one of the nest of table had come loose and needed re-gluing - fairly easy to fix.  Then the WC needed urgent attention - the cistern would not fill because the flush was running all the time - luckily my trusty plumber was able to come and fix it.  Then today we had a swarm of flying ants arrive in the cottage but fly spray and lots of hoovering soon dispatched them.

And people think it's so easy running a holiday cottage.  Perhaps I'll write a book one day.

Gardening with 'friends' doesn't always make the job easier!

Bird's Eye View

Bird's Eye View

This photo was taken from the top of the viaduct.  Most  trains are being hauled by diesel engines because of the extreme fire risk on the moors.

More Birds

More Birds

These Pied Wagtails have taken a shine to the picnic table.  This summer's parched grass is ideal for them and they like the short grass.

August Discounts

The school holidays are here.  We have vacancies 18-26 August - special offer - 7 nights reduced from £510 to £450.  Short breaks available too.

More Ducklings

More Ducklings

Another batch of ducklings today - nine in all.  She must have nested in the hedge bottom on the other side of the road - so there was a heart-stopping moment and she brought them across.

Diesels

Diesels

Two more diesel engines running in place of the steamers due to the extreme fire risk on the moors.

Wildlife Area

Wildlife Area

It's that time of year again when the wildlife area gets the grass cut.  After all the winter rain the grass was 5-6 ft high in places.  Now it's dry and parched.  This area always looks bigger when the grass is cut - just an optical illusion.

August Availability

August Availability

We have just 8 days available in August - 18-26 August.  This coincides with Whitby Folk Week and the school holidays.  Just give me a call to book your dates.

New Diesel Engine

New Diesel Engine

The London Transport L142 Sir John Betjeman diesel engine will be running along the line through the summer.  Diesel engines are replacing some of the steamers due to the high fire risk on the moorland.

Duck News

Duck News

A new batch of 7 ducklings arrived this afternoon - sadly by teatime they were down to 5.  Just make easy pickings for the seagulls and herons - so small they don't stand a chance.

Captain Cook

Captain Cook

The Endeavour has arrived in Whitby for the 250th Anniversary of Captain Cook.  Still lots of mist and drizzle from the sea fret but it certainly adds some atmosphere to the scene.  No doubt Captain Cook experienced a lot of this!

Sea Fret Again!

Sea Fret Again!

Yet another damp, misty day on the east coast with the sea fret but spotted this heron on the river.

Duckling News

Duckling News

The five ducklings are growing up fast.  They're getting their adult feathers but no colours yet so can't tell if they are male or female.  Can't fly yet but are starting to stretch their wings.

Another batch of 11 arrived this morning - so tiny!
